At 15, while visiting my grandmother’s house in Taitung I chanced upon the Taiwan International Balloon Festival taking place in Luye. I played an impromptu cello set in the bright sunshine to accompany the cheery tourists dancing and singing.
At 16, I set out alone for the United States for high school. Often in tears from being homesick, I sought comfort in the memories of the colorful hot air balloons floating in the blue sky and white clouds, above the green grass and the sound of warm laughter coming from the crowd below.
At 17, I returned to Taitung to volunteer at a local hospital. This was when I became fully conscious of the beauty and sorrow of Taitung—underneath the beautiful mountains and ocean was a story of underprivileged township with insufficient resources common among remote areas. Seeing how every day the elders and children looked forward to my arrival with my cello, I finally realized I could contribute much more to the community.
I would like to raise funds to shoot a short promotional film “Going Home and Giving Back” to get across the beauty of Taitung! In the video, I will travel through the splendid mountains and coastline of Taitung, from the “Golden Paradise Path,” aka Mr. Brown Avenue, to the Pisirian immortalized by the illustrator Jimmy, in order to exhibit the vibrant authenticity of Taitung. Furthermore, the music video will include a heartwarming story about Hannah's Hope Home.
In September 2014, clutching the plane ticket tightly in my hand and pretending not to be afraid, I mustered up the courage to step out of my comfort zone to study in the U.S. At school, I made many friends that come from different countries. I worked hard to integrate into the American life and understand the various cultures swirling in the melting pot. However, all my classmates and teachers knew about Taiwan was Taipei city. Not a single person had heard about the beautiful mountains and ocean in Taitung. During the spring break in March of 2016, I came back to Taiwan to serve as a music volunteer at the Taitung Christian Hospital, Canaan Nursing Home, and Hannah's Hope Home.
What Is Hannah's Hope Home?
Hannah's Hope Home is an orphanage that provides 24-hour care to orphans and mistreated children between the ages of 0 to 2. Children in these situations awaiting adoption are taken care of and provided for at the center. In addition, Hannah's Hope Home actively participates in sex education and abortion prevention programs at schools of all levels and in the community.
The first time I set foot in Hannah's Hope Home I was faced with 8 two-year-old children peering at me with skepticism. As soon as I started playing the cello though, they waddled toward me and started touching my cello with curiosity. There was only one child, nicknamed “小酷’, who stayed gazing at me from afar. The next day, while I was dancing and singing with the children, 小酷 remained alone in the corner observing the rest of the children.
As the melody of the song “Here Comes the Train” started slowly, 小酷 began to nod to the beat, eventually joining the singing of the group. Afterward, his caregiver told me that it was the only song he enjoyed. He smiled back at me when I complimented him on his singing. It was the first time I saw him smile, his eyes bending into two crescent moons. It was a smile that expressed pure contentment. What pleased me the most was that every day I spent at Hannah's Hope Home, I saw the same smile on every child’s face.
While working as a volunteer, I documented the cute interactions with the children at the center as well as their heartbreaking personal histories. I even contemplated turning their stories into short films and uploading them onto YouTube to raise public awareness about their situation. However, out of consideration for their privacy, I decided to operate counterintuitively and shoot a video focusing on the beauty of Taitung instead of its sorrow.
Tied into the plot of the video will be me playing my cello by the sea and in the mountains of Taitung. Taitung’s beauty will be shown through the music and its sceneries to attract people from all over the world to come visit. Moreover, the video will incorporate a heartwarming story about Hannah's Hope Home so as to introduce the children at the center to the public and inspire people to care about and assist them. After deducting the platform fee and the procedural fee, half of the fund raised will be donated to Hannah's Hope Home for the purpose of improving the conditions at the center for the children so they can grow up with all the resources they need.
Caring for Remote Areas and International Promotion
Upon its completion, the music video will be uploaded onto YouTube and available for use for free by any traveling platforms. The lines in the video will be presented in English, Korean, and Japanese, allowing foreigners to experience the warmth and vitality of Taitung. It will also give Taiwanese people the chance to refamiliarize themselves with the pristine paradise that is Taitung. The plot will be connected to Hannah's Hope Home to draw people’s attention to the children at the center. We will donate half of the money we raise to Hannah's Hope Home to fulfill our intention of caring for remote areas in need.
Production of Original Music
The music in the video is independently created and performed by me and 11 of my good friends. The main melody will be comprised of the moving sound of cello, a sound that has resonated with me always.
Storyline in the Music Video
I’m standing in the middle of a golden rice field carrying my cello. The sweet smell of rice comes in waves with the wind. What a familiar fragrance! Ha! I’m back to Taitung. But why can’t I remember my way back to Grandmother’s house?
All of a sudden, an adorable aboriginal girl “Bonnie,” humming a tune, passes me by on the road and offers to help me find my grandmother’s house. This is how our journey, accompanied by music, through the beautiful nature of Taitung to find our way home begins.
Two young girls lark about walking along the road. We linger at the Flowing Lake, playing the cello and dancing. We linger at the “Golden Paradise Path,” aka Mr. Brown Avenue, and then at the Pisirian, famously portrayed by the illustrator Jimmy. We stop at the Taiwan International Balloon Festival, watching the hot air balloons float toward the familiar blue sky and white clouds, flying among the birds in the air. I am seized by the desire to play a joyful melody on my cello while the cute aboriginal girl dances to the music.
However, can I successfully find my grandmother’s house? What is the mystery behind Bonnie?
Shooting Locations
In order to create the most ideal cinematography, we will shoot in various locations in Taitung, including in the mountains and by the sea.
Apart from the popular sightseeing spots listed above, there are some hidden sights that will await your discovery in the music video!
Budget Allocation
▲After deducting the platform fee and the procedural fee, half of the fund raised will be donated to Hannah's Hope Home. We will make public all the relevant receipts in our progress updates.
▲The budget for the music video will be 150,000 NTD. The budget will determine the quality of the production; therefore, we will require enough fund to shoot a video with high enough quality that can be used for international promotion. Once the budget for the video is raised, the rest of the fund collected will be donated in full to Hanna’s Hope Home. The donation certification will be posted in our progress update.

Peddie School
